Misinformation and Disinformation may sound the same, but have two very different meanings.





What is Misinformation and Disinformation?

Misinformation is false information that is unintentionally false.
Disinformation is false information that is intentionally false.

What is the Difference between Misinformation and Disinformation?

Misinformation is false information that isn't intentionally spread.
Disinformation is false information that is intentionally spread to confuse and hurt people.

How are both of these a problem for social media users?

Both are a problem because it can lead to people being tricked by the false information and the information getting spread more.

Misinformation: The tennis team won by 6 points today.
Disinformation: The tennis team won by 6 points today but the opponents were really bad.

How are they being spread on social media?

The people with the false information share it on social media, and the audience thinks that it's true and spreads it to their audience.

How is AI involved with the spread on social media?

The social media AI shows you things that you could be interested on your media page, so that the information can get to more people.

How are video and audio part of the problem?

Both are a problem because it makes it easier for the audience to believe it if they are hearing or seeing it, instead of reading the information.

Who is spreading misinformation and disinformation and why?

Misinformation can be spread by anyone because anyone may think it was true, when in fact it wasn't.
Disinformation is usually spread by people who are trying to personally attack or threaten an audience.

How is fake news related to misinformation and disinformation?

Fake news is related to both of them because both mis and dis information are fake news.

Why do people fall for it?

People fall for it because the information is usually believable and because people are saying that the information is true.
